Pushing the Limit? (Original)
Marvel Heroes are forever screaming at each other to try a little harder, think a little longer, make the flame a little hotter, or hold the dam just a tiny bit little longer. In the game, you can raise any ability or power by the value of any of the cards in your hand. But at the cost of not redrawing the cards. If this reduces your hero to zero, your hero falls unconscious.
For example; If Storm needs to counter a freak hurricane from destroying Phoenix (Arizona). Storm’s Weather Control is 13, her edge is 2. Tey, who is playing Storm, has these cards: 1, 4, 6, and 8, none of them Intellect Cards (the trump suit for Weather Control). Best Case scenario gets Storm a 9, which when added to her 13 gets a 22 — a good score, but Tey guesses it’s not good enough. She thinks a million lives are worth a little sweat, so she pushes her Weather Control by blowing out the 8. She then performs her action, adding the 1 and 6 to push her 21 Weather Control for a 28. The narrator reveals that Storm hit the difficulty of 28 dead-on, so she quells the wind. Tey redraws to replace the 1 and 6, but not the push card. With luck she won’t have to do that again any time soon.
Pushing the Limit? (For MWI Uses)
Marvel Heroes are forever screaming at each other to try a little harder, think a little longer, make the flame a little hotter, or hold the dam just a tiny bit little longer. In the game, you can raise any ability or power by the value of any relevant skill bonus or related power bonus. But at the cost of stretching your base power to a dangerous limit that will come with repercussions.
For example; If Storm needs to counter a freak hurricane from destroying Phoenix (Arizona). Storm’s Weather Control is 13, her edge is 2. Tey, who is playing Storm, has these skills and powers on her c-sheet; Energy Control, Air Control 13. Best case scenario Storm gets a +1 bonus for having a D code in intellect, so her normal roll would need to be under 16 (Weather Control 13 + Edge 2 + 1 Bonus). Tey guesses the dice gods will not favor her. She thinks a million lives are worth a little sweat, so she she pushes Weather control to the limit adding in related (Intellect Trump Suit) power bonuses. She then performs her action adding the Energy Control (+1), and her Edge (+2), to give her a natural 16. Then Blowing Out, her Air Control (13) for a total one post power score of 29. The Storyteller then reveals that the Hurricane was intensity 28, and that Storm succeeded in his attempts to quell the wind. This monumental effort has totally maxed out Ororo’s ability to use Weather Control for an indereminate amount of time, but no less than 24 hours. Hopefully Storm won’t have to do that again any time soon.
