Equipment has always played a large role in the world of Marvel. From Daredevil’s Billy Club to the Fantasti-Car, from Captain America’s Shield, to the X-Men’s Blackbird, from Hawkeye’s Arrows, to Spiderman’s Webshooters, heroes and villains alike accumulate and make use of a wide variety of gadgets, gizmos, trinkets and wonders that expand their capabilities and allow them to overcome situations above and beyond the norm.
In the most general of terms, Equipment is any item that alters a character’s basic abilities, positively or negatively. This could be anything from a chair leg used as an improvised club, to a starship’s cannon. Any time a character uses a telephone, drives an automobile, or even brushes their teeth; they are using “Equipment”. Clearly, trying to catalog every item a character comes in contact with would be an exhaustive and impossible process. Characters are assumed to have access to any item that could simply be purchased in a real world environment by someone of their financial status without the need for additional approval from room staff. A player is allowed to use their discretion when deciding exactly what their character owns in terms of this mundane equipment. While Peter Parker, with his constant financial troubles, should not be driving around in a Corvette, it is reasonable for Tony Stark to have a whole fleet of them, in different colors for each day of the week.
Staff approval is necessary for any piece of equipment that surpasses this ‘mundane’ level, however. These are items that can be considered to significantly alter a character’s capabilities, and so must be regulated for the sake of game setting and balance issues. If in doubt of whether a desired item falls under the ‘mundane’ category or not, simply contact your character’s Storyteller for clarification.
